POMONA, Calif. – Following up the two wins on the road against Cal State San Bernardino, the No. 23 Cal Poly Pomona Broncos earned the sweep of the Coyotes with a pair of wins at Scolinos Field on Saturday. With the victories, the Broncos have guaranteed themselves at least a share of the CCAA South Division Title.
The wins for CPP improved them to a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) record of 22-10 en route to an overall season tally of 31-14. The Coyotes now carry a record of 20-25, complete with a 15-18 showing in conference play.
GAME ONE: CPP 6 – CSUSB 0
With a gem of an outing for the Broncos, CPP co-captain
Max Bethell secured the win in the day's opening contest. Bethell delivered for eight innings and allowed just three hits in the ballgame. The win for the senior was his seventh of the season.
The Bronco offense spread out it's scoring in the contest and marked a single run in six of the eight innings it batted in.
In the first inning,
Jacob Bernardy hit a sacrifice fly to center to score
Jared James from third and post CPP's first run. With the second inning,
Nicholas Bruno singled through the left side to score
Daniel Pitts and advance
Ryan Webberley.
Caleb Romo saw a pitch he liked in the bottom of the third inning and with it sent out his sixth homerun of the season, advancing the scoreboard to 3-0.
In the sixth, James reached safely on a fielder's choice that brought home the CPP catcher
Alex Kline. Inning seven came with Webberley adding run No. 5 on a double to left center that scored Pitts. The eighth inning found
Jason Padlo getting a sacrifice fly of his own to score Bernardy for the game's final score of 6-0.
GAME TWO: CPP 7 - CSUSB 1
Michael Koval threw for 6.2 innings in what would be his conference-leading eighth win of the season. The junior allowed just one run to score on five hits as he tallied five strikeouts and just a pair of walks. He improves to 8-2 on the season.
In the first inning, the Coyotes struck first with a single to the Broncos' shortstop that scored what would be their only run on the day.
The Green and Gold answered back in the bottom half of the inning as Padlo doubled to left center to score Bernardy. In the second inning,
Sean Grebeck tallied the first RBI of his collegiate career with a line drive single up the middle that scored Pitts.
Soon after Grebeck's RBI, James singled through the right side to advance all runners and score Webberley and
Cody Martin. The fourth and final run of the inning came on a sac fly from Bernardy that scored Grebeck.
In the third, the home team tacked on a couple more safety runs to advance their lead to 7-1. Webberley flew out to left to score
Nic Hernandez and lock in a sac fly of his own. The final run for CPP came as Pitts scored on a wild pitch.
Looking Ahead
CPP will stay in SoCal for its final regular season series as they split hosting duties with Cal State Dominguez Hills.
