STOCKTON, Calif. – A dominating performance from
Max Bethell on the bump spurred the No. 21 Cal Poly Pomona Broncos to a 6-2 victory on the second day of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Baseball Championships.
Just two runs allowed on four hits, complete with a tie for his career-high 11 strikeouts pushed the CPP senior co-captain to his ninth win on the season. His tally is now 9-4. In the game he also surrendered just three walks.
The Broncos' win improves the squad to a 35-16 record on the season while dropping the Coyotes to 22-29. The elimination game spelled the end of the season for the CSUSB team.
In the first inning, the Coyotes, who locked in the home seed Wednesday, posted a run on a single to right field.
Not to be outdone,
Caleb Romo put the Broncos on the board with his eighth homerun of the season. The shot to left center sailed over the fence and landed in the Coyote's bullpen. After the inning's leadoff shot, a sacrifice fly for
Ryan Webberley scored
Nic Hernandez who had reached via walk and moved to third on a
Jared James single.
The following inning showed CPP earning three more runs as
Jason Padlo singled through the left side to score
Chris Stratton. A single through the right side from Hernandez then scored
Jacob Bernardy, and a sacrifice fly from
Daniel Pitts scored Padlo, making the score 5-1 after two and a half.
A solo shot to left from the Coyote's catcher made the score 5-2 in the fifth. The homer was his fourth of the season, and the team's final run of 2016.
In the eighth, a two-out triple to left center for
Ryan Webberley scored Hernandez and gave the game its final 6-2 score.
The Broncos advance to play in the 3 p.m. game Friday against the UC San Diego Tritons. UCSD advanced to the game after a walk-off hit in the bottom of the ninth against Chico State.
