LA JOLLA, Calif. - With a tremendous team effort, Cal Poly Pomona earned a 3-0 sweep of BYU Hawaii on Saturday afternoon to wrap up the D2 West Region Volleyball Showcase held in La Jolla at UC San Diego.
The victory avenges the Broncos' loss in the season opener at BYUH. After Saturday's result, CPP improves its record to 4-4. Up next, the Broncos will play their home opener on Wednesday at Kellogg Arena with a 6 p.m. start against Azusa Pacific. It will mark the final non-conference match for CPP. California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) begins Friday with a home contest against Humboldt State.
On Saturday in La Jolla, the Broncos posted an attack percentage of .340 with 41 kills as a team.
Andrea Bosnic led the way with 10 kills and a .444 hitting mark while
Deanna Blaine collected nine kills and added eight digs.
Alexandra Gresham and
Kristen Hamlin bolstered the defense at the net with five blocks apiece.
Alina Smith and
Kay Powell split the setting duties, combining for 30 assists in total.
The Seasiders stayed close through the first set but CPP finished strong, getting two kills by Bosnic in the final three points to wrap up the 25-20 result. The two teams traded the lead multiple times in the second frame but the Broncos used a late 6-0 run to put the margin out of reach. That terrific stretch featured two service aces from Blaine and
Karah Griffiths finished off the set with kill.
The third set included long runs of points for both teams as BYU trailed 20-12 but pulled to within 20-17 just a bit later. The Broncos didn't allow the Seasiders to get any closer though, putting toegether their own 5-0 run capped off with a kill from Blaine to end the match.
