ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Despite a goal in the 70th minute, the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team couldn't climb all the way back from a two-score halftime deficit and fell 2-1 at Sonoma State Friday afternoon.
The result drops the Broncos to 4-2-1 overall and 0-1-0 to start California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play. Meanwhile SSU improves to 2-5-0 overall and 0-1-0 in league action.
CPP resumes its Northern California trip on Sunday with a 2 p.m. kickoff at Humboldt State.
The Seawolves netted two goals in the first half on Friday, one from Josh Sanchez at the 3:49 mark and one from Armando Coronel at 28:07. Despite the early gap, the Broncos did not back down.
In the 70th minute,
Jordan Jackmon and
Jose Garcia set up a score for
Sergi Monso. It marks Monso's fifth goal of the season with all of those scores coming in the last three games. He is now the CCAA leader in goals at this point in the season.
SSU posted a slight advantage in shots, 11-10. The Broncos managed more corner kick opportunities, 5-2. CPP senior
Jesus Tamayo was assessed a red card in the 67th minute and the Seawolves' Luis Mendoza picked up his second yellow caution – and subsequent red – at the 88:25 mark.
While Monso tallied a team-high three shots,
Dante Medina contributed two of his own.
