HILO, Hawaii - Despite dropping the first two games to Hawaii Hilo on Monday and at one point trailing 14-5 in the fourth frame, Cal Poly Pomona volleyball never quit. Instead, the Broncos capped off their Hawaii trip with an incredible 3-2 comeback victory.
Josh Pacheco, the ESPN Radio commentator describing the action, called the CPP squad "gritty" and "relentless." Those adjectives certainly summed up the Broncos' determination in extending the match while quieting the home crowd in Hilo.
Â
Three CPP players finished with double-digit kill totals as
Deanna Blaine led the way with 17 while
Andrea Bosnic added 15 and
Alexandra Gresham contributed 11.
Alina Smith tallied a whopping 44 assists and the Broncos played great defense as a team, including a team-high 17 digs by
Samantha Figueroa.
Now with a two-match winning streak and a 2-2 record to start the season, CPP will enter this week's Crossover Tournament with plenty of confidence. The Broncos are set to play four matches across a three-day span, starting Thursday against Northwest Nazarene. All four of the contests will be held at UC San Diego in La Jolla.

Monday's match in Hilo seemed to be slipping away from CPP, a squad that dropped the first frame 25-18. The Vulcans continued to cruise in the second game, taking it by a lopsided score of 25-11. The Broncos bounced back in the third, jumping out to a 7-2 lead with three kills from Bosnic and two from Blaine in that span. CPP edged Hawaii Hilo 25-21 in the third after
Kristen Hamlin wrapped up the frame with a kill.
The Vulcans appeared ready to take a 3-1 result in the match after pushing out to a 14-5 edge in the fourth game. The Broncos countered with an 11-2 run to tie the score as Blaine delivered a pair of service aces in that stretch. CPP finished off the game with a 25-20 score.
The early portion of the fifth game featured plenty of Bosnic, as she recorded four kills to help the Broncos take a 6-3 lead. Blaine bolstered the CPP attack down the stretch, notching the final kill to wrap up the comeback win.
