SAN MARCOS – Getting back on the winning side of things, the Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team downed Cal State San Marcos in dramatic fashion, winning 2-1 in overtime on the road on Sunday.
With the win, the Broncos improve to 8-2-1 overall and 4-2-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
"Great result for the team today against a very physical and well organized CSUSM team," said Head Coach
Jay Mason.
After playing to a scoreless tie, the Broncos scored their first goal of the game in the 54
th minute as
Amanda Duran crossed the ball from the left side of the field, finding the foot of
Ambria Pogue who tapped the ball in for her first goal of the season.
San Marcos outshot the Broncos 10-8 but CPP took the advantage in shots on goal 4-3.
With less than four minutes to go, the Cougars kept their hopes alive, scoring on a late penalty kick to send the game into overtime.
"I'm proud of the girls' resiliency after a late PK call that could've undone all the hard work they put in."
Just over five minutes into the overtime period, Pogue sent the ball on a cross to
Daisy Duran, who trapped the ball just outside of the box before finding the back of the net for the game-winner and her fourth goal of the season.
"We were able to move the ball at a much better tempo today which allowed us to get into more dangerous spaces and ultimately, created two great goals by Ambria and Daisy."
The Broncos return to Kellogg Field on Friday as they welcome in Humboldt State at 12:30 p.m. and Sonoma State on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
