CHICO – Looking to stay in the top two spots in the California Collegiate Athletic Association standings, the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team survived a double-overtime battle, defeating 23rd-ranked Chico State 3-2 on Friday.
With the win, the Broncos improve to 11-3 overall on the year, 7-2 in the CCAA.
Jimmie Villalobos started things off for the Broncos, controlling a cross from
Jose Garcia before blasting a shot from six yards out in the 12th-minute mark.
Chico outshot the Broncos 15-13 while CPP held a 6-2 advantage in shots on goal.
The Broncos added to their lead less than seven minutes from their first goal as
Luis Najera Jr., headed the ball to the far post after a restart from 25-yards out.
Down 2-0, the Wildcats found their offense, back-to-back goals in the 21st minute and again in the 44th minute to tie the match heading into halftime.
Six players total at least one shot for the Broncos with Villalobos leading with a total of four shots.
After nearly an hour without a score, the Broncos broke through in the opening minutes of the second overtime period as
Matthew Perez headed the ball inside the post after a cross from
Jeremy Totays to earn the road win.
CPP returns to the field on Sunday, Oct. 15, as they travel to Stanislaus State. Start time is set for 11:30 a.m.
