TURLOCK – The Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team picked up their third straight road victory on Sunday, defeating Stanislaus State 3-2.
The Broncos improve to 12-3 overall and 8-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association as they sit in second-place in the conference standings with two regular-season games remaining.
Sergi Monso broke a three-match scoreless streak, converting a penalty kick in the fourth minute of play to give CPP an early advantage over the Warriors.
CPP led in shots, totaling 16 with four on target compared to 11 shots, three on goal, from Stanislaus State.
In the 16th minute, the Warriors tied things up with a corner kick into the box as Ahmed Mohammed controlled the ball before turning and firing to earn the equalizer. Stanislaus wasn't done as they found a way back into the box just over 10 minutes later, converting a shot to the right post to take a 2-1 lead into the half.
Monso finished with a match-high nine shots with two landing on goal while
Jose Garcia collected two shots on the day.
After nearly 70 minutes from their last score, the Broncos finally found the back of the net once again as Monso sent a free kick just outside the 18-yard box, finding the head of
Matthew Perez who scored his fifth goal of the season.
Just moments later, Monso scored the game-winner, launching a shot from outside the box for his second score of the game and his 17th goal of the season. He ranks second overall in Division II in goals scored and is only one goal away from tying the CPP program record for career goals with 34 in three seasons.
