POMONA – The 25
th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team bounced back on Sunday afternoon, defeating 16th-ranked Sonoma State 1-0 in double overtime at Kellogg Field.
"I'm extremely happy for the girls today. They showed a great deal of grit against one of the top teams and programs in the country," said Head Coach
Jay Mason.
With the win, the Broncos improve to 8-3-1 overall on the year and 5-2-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
Both teams played to a scoreless tie through 102 minutes before the Broncos finally crossed the plane of the goal.
Amanda Duran controlled the ball down the right side of the field before crossing in to the box and finding the foot of
Tasha Inong who volleyed the ball into the left corner of the net for the win.
"Sonoma put us under a lot of pressure the first 30 min and we were able to weather that storm which gave us confidence heading into the 2nd half. Our discipline in critical areas today could've cost us the game, credit to Sonoma for putting us in those spots but we need to be much better moving forward."
CPP played evenly with Sonoma as both teams notched 14 shots with five shots on goal.
The Seawolves had two big opportunities in the second half of play, missing a penalty kick attempt of the right crossbar before missing a second PK nearly 10 minutes later to the left.
"In the second half, I thought the girls were able to use the wide areas more constructively which allowed us to spread them out a bit. Our energy got better as the game wore on and I credit our depth for keeping us in the fight today."
Natalie Di Angelo finished with a team high four shots while Inong tallied three shots in the game.
"We look forward to another week of improving in preparation for a very difficult road trip."
The Broncos will travel north this weekend as they face off against Chico State on Friday, Oct. 13 and Stanislaus State on Saturday, Oct. 14.
