Broncos Survive Marathon Match to Defeat Dominguez Hills in Five

POMONA – In what was easily the longest match of the year for the Cal Poly Pomona volleyball, the Broncos held on to defeat Cal State Dominguez Hills 3-2 (25-22, 25-20, 20-25, 23-25, and 24-22) on Friday night at Kellogg Arena.

With the win, the Broncos improve to 11-12 overall on the year and 7-8 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

Four Broncos tallied double-digits in kills with Andrea Bosnic leading the way with 19 while Jenna Goldsberry notched 17 followed by Alexandra Gresham with 16 and Kristen Kamlin with 10 kills.

The Broncos jumped ahead to a quick 2-0 lead in sets, holding the Toros to a hitting percentage of .133 in the opening set before hitting .295 themselves in the second set.

Samantha Figueroa had a career night for the Broncos in the backline, tallying a career-high 50 digs against CSUDH. Behind her was Alina Smith with 19 digs while Andrea Bosnic and Kay Powell each finished with 10 digs.

Fight off the sweep and sending the match to a fifth set was Dominguez Hills who came out of the break with a strong defense, holding the Broncos to a combined .050 hitting percentage in both sets.

The marathon fifth set was as close as it could be with neither team gaining a lead of more than two points. The Toros earned the first match point at 14-13 but a kill by Bosnic kept the Broncos in the match. CPP fought off a total of six match-points before taking the lead 23-22 after a service error by CSUDH before a kill by Gresham sealed the victory and ended the match just under the three-hour mark.

Smith finished with 43 total assists and she split time at the setter position with Powell who notched 29 assists of her own.

The Broncos return to action tomorrow night as they welcome in Cal State Los Angeles at Kellogg Arena for a 7 p.m. match.
