POMONA – The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team picked up their second win of the weekend as they completed the season sweep of Cal State Los Angeles, defeating the Golden Eagles 3-1 on Saturday night at Kellogg Arena.
With the win, the Broncos keep their playoff hopes alive as they move to 12-12 overall on the year and 8-8 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
In the opening set of the night, the Eagles fought off a 24-21 deficit to tie the match, eventually winning 31-29.
Andrea Bosnic thrived offensively, hitting .239 on the way to 21 total kills while Alex Gresham added 12 kills and
Kristen Hamlin finished with nine kills off of 17 swings.
The Broncos fought back to tie the match at one set apiece as they strong together three straight points on three separate occasions to stay ahead of Cal State LA.
Alina Smith orchestrated the offense, tallying 40 assists for CPP while
Samantha Figueroa held down the backline, collecting 35 digs. Figueroa totaled 85 digs in two matches for CPP after setting the Broncos' single-match program record in last night's win with 50 digs.
Bending but not breaking in the third set, CPP held a 19-14 lead before CSULA fought back to take a 24-23 lead. The Broncos kept fighting as they scored three straight points, winning the set off an attack error by the Eagles.
Bosnic added 11 digs while
Kay Powell finished the match with 11 assists. As a team, the Broncos collected 10 blocks overall.
Trailing 19-14 in the fourth and final set, the Broncos surged back to tie the set 20-20 before scoring five of the final six points to win their second straight CCAA match.
Prior to Saturday's match, the Broncos honored three of their senior players in Gresham, Smith and Figueroa.
The Broncos continue action next week as they make the long trek north to face Humboldt State on Saturday, Nov. 11.
