SAN DIEGO – The Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team extended their season on Thursday, defeating third-seed Simon Fraser 2-1 in the opening round of the 2017 NCAA West Regional Tournament at the campus of Point Loma Nazarene University.
With the win, the Broncos improve to 15-5-0 overall on the year, knocking Simon Fraser out of the tournament for the second year in a row.
Jimmie Villalobos had a quick start to the match, scoring the first goal of the game in only the third minute as
Matthew Perez passed from the middle of SFU's half, leaving Villalobos with an open look to the right corner of the net.
CPP's lead didn't last long as the Clan pressured the Broncos in the very next possession, forcing an own goal on a missed clearance less than two minutes later.
While SFU managed 16 total shots compared to CPP's five, Simon Fraser finished with only five shots on goal while the Broncos tallied three.
After an eventful three minutes of play, things calmed down with neither team able to add another goal before the half.
Nearly 83 minutes after the Broncos' first goal, CPP finally broke through to score the game-winner as
Dante Medina collected a pass from
Sergi Monso before finishing to advance his team to the second round of the tournament.
The result was the reverse of CPP's regular season matchup against SFU earlier this year where the Broncos conceded a late goal to give the Clan a 2-1 win at Montana State University, Billings' Rimrock Classic.
The Broncos will advance to play host and second-seed Point Loma on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 1 p.m. at PLNU Soccer Field.
