Late Rally Lifts Broncos Over Cal State East Bay, Winning 59-51

POMONA – The Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team closed out the 2017 year with a 59-51 victory over Cal State East Bay, sweeping the weekend of California Collegiate Athletic Association action.


THE BASICS:

HOW IT HAPPENED:
-    After scoring the first five points of the contest, the Broncos worked a 20-12 lead over East Bay midway through the first half of play.
-    The Pioneers continued to stay close with CPP throughout the night, cutting the lead to three points at 26-23 heading into the break.
-    The Broncos shot 43 percent from the field, including a 10-for-17 result from behind the arc while CSUEB shot 34 percent on the night.
-    After East Bay tied the game at 48-48, Quentin Taylor scored seven straight points to pull away from the Pioneers before a layup by Chris Sullivan sealed the victory, giving CPP their largest lead of the night, 57-48, with just under three minutes to play.

KEY PERFORMERS: 
-    Taylor led the Broncos in scoring, totaling 13 points along with two assists and a steal.
-    Justin Young tallied 10 points while Jordan Ogundiran finished with eight points and a team-high eight rebounds.
-    Daylan Lawrence finished with nine points, going 3-of-3 from behind three-point range.
-    Riley Schaefer collected six rebounds to go along with three points and two steals.

OUTSIDE THE BOX: 
-    A 6-1 start in CCAA play is the best start to the conference CPP has had since the 2015-16 season where they went 8-1 to begin the year.
-    The Broncos have won 11 of the last 13 meetings against the Pioneers.
-    The top defense in the CCAA continues to work as the Broncos held their sixth opponent to under 60 points.

The Broncos will head north next weekend as they prepare to take on San Francisco State and Sonoma State starting Friday, January 5.
