SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Behind a monster outing at the plate by
Cody Martin, the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team overcame a six-run deficit to even the series against Point Loma, winning game two 14-12 on the road Saturday afternoon.
The Broncos (3-4) tallied 12 hits in the game with six players registering multiple hits in the game. Martin finished 4-for-6 with two home runs and five RBIs while
Jacob Bernardy finished with two hits and three RBIs.
CPP opened the scoring in the first inning after a fly out by
Jason Padlo brought in
Chris Stratton for the first run of the game. Martin followed that up with a two-run homer to take a 3-0 lead.
The Sea Lions (3-3) got one run back in the first inning before batting around in the second inning, scoring eight runs in the process to take a 9-3 lead.
In the third inning, the Broncos added two more runs after Martin recorded his second home run, bringing in
Nic Hernandez.
Starting the fourth inning down 10-5, CPP continued to score, adding two runs after RBI singles by Stratton and Hernandez.
After giving up 10 runs on eight hits, the Broncos' pitching settled down for five scoreless innings, giving up only three hits in the process.
In the fifth inning, the Broncos tied the game 10-10 after a three-RBI double by Bernardy. CPP pitcher
Peter Beattie recorded his second win the season, pitching 1 1/3 innings, giving up only one hit and a walk.
The Broncos took the lead back in the sixth inning after
Bryce Graddy singled up the right side to bring in
Daniel Pitts, and added two more runs in the seventh.
Padlo ended with three hits while Stratton, Pitts, Hernandez and Graddy each finished with two hits.
The Broncos return to Scolinos Field for game three of the series against Point Loma which is set for Monday, Feb. 13 at 6 p.m.
