POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team continued to remain perfect in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play on Thursday night, downing Cal State San Bernardino 6-2 in game one of the four-game series at Scolinos Field.
The win marks CPP's fifth straight, improving to 9-7 overall and 5-0 in the CCAA while the Coyotes fall to 2-11, 2-3 CCAA.
Nic Hernandez had a big day at the plate for the Broncos, giving his team the lead 2-1 in the first inning with a two-run homer to straight center, hitting just off the wall. Hernandez added another RBI in the third inning, singling through the right side to score
Cody Martin. He finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs.
The Broncos finished the third winning with three runs and a 5-2 lead. Following Hernandez's single,
Brennan McKenzie hit into a double play to score a runner from third followed by a single by
Frankie Nogales.
Jeff Bain started on the mound for CPP, going six innings with five strikeouts and five hits. Pitching three innings in relief and picking up his second save of the season was
Ryan Alsworth who face 10 batters and allowed only one hit.
McKenize earned his second RBI of the night in the seventh innings, working a full count before reaching first on a bases load walk.
The Broncos return to Scolinos Field tomorrow afternoon for game two of the series against the Coyotes with first pitch set for 2 p.m.
