POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team once again got off to a quick start in the opening game of a series, this time defeating Cal State Los Angeles 11-6 on Thursday night at Scolinos Field.
The Broncos need only two innings, scoring four runs in the fourth inning before adding seven runs in the seventh.
Jeff Bain notched his sixth start of the season for CPP, improving to 3-0 as he allowed only four hits through seven scoreless innings with seven strikeouts.
Six players earned at least one RBI for the Broncos with freshman
Brennan McKenzie leading the way with three RBIs after launching a ball deep to left center for a three-run home run to top off the fourth inning.
Tallying three runs in the seventh due to wild pitches, the Broncos added to their lead as
Cody Martin,
Frankie Nogales,
Kyle Candalla and
Bryce Graddy each tallied an RBI, giving CPP an 11-0 lead heading into the eighth inning.
Cal State Los Angeles finally made some noise late, scoring one run as Nate Navarrete reached base on an error before crossing the plate after a wild pitch. The Golden Eagles kept fighting in the ninth, scoring five more runs, led by a three-run homer by Sean Watkins but the deficit was too large to overcome.
