LA JOLLA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team got off to a great start against No. 4 UC San Diego on the road on Thursday night, defeating the Tritons 7-1 in game one of the four-game series.
The Broncos improve to 19-17 on the year and 15-10 in the CCAA, while the CCAA South division leaders drop to 24-8, 16-6 CCAA.
In one of his best performances of the season,
Jeremy Taylor started on the mound for the Broncos, throwing 6.1 innings while giving up only six hits and one run to improve to 2-1 on the year.
Frankie Nogales got the offense going in the third inning, singling to center field to score
Chris Stratton followed by another RBI single by
Daniel Pitts and a sacrifice fly by
Nic Hernandez to take a 3-0 lead on the road.
The Broncos scored three more runs in the fourth inning, led by an RBI double by
Brennan McKenzie.
Jacob Bernardy brought home McKenzie with a single to right field while another single by Stratton gave CPP a 6-0 lead.
Cody Martin finished with a team-high three hits as five other Broncos recorded two hits as CPP tallied 15 hits on the night.
Nogales earned his second RBI in the sixth inning, launching a ball to right field to score
Sean Grebeck on a sacrifice fly.
Pitching in relief was
Matthew Grier who finished with 2.1 innings pitched, giving up one hit with two strikeouts.
The Broncos return to Triton Ballpark Friday night for game two of the series with first pitch set for 6 p.m.
