LA JOLLA, Calif. – Taking a 2-0 advantage in the series, the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team defeated UC San Diego 9-3 on Friday night to sweep the road portion of the series.
Falling behind 3-0 in the first inning, CPP's
Brennan McKenzie got the Broncos (20-17, 16-10 CCAA) on the board with a two RBI triple in the second.
Chris Stratton followed up with a single to score McKenzie and tie the game.
Jeff Bain picked up his fifth win of the season on the mound for CPP, throwing eight inning with 11 hits, three runs and 10 strikeouts.
The Broncos took the lead in the fifth inning as
Daniel Pitts reached base on a fielder's choice, scoring Stratton to take a 4-3 advantage.
Stratton finished with three hits while
Jacob Bernardy and
Jason Padlo both tallied two hits.
CPP closed out the the final two innings with five runs to seal the victory, scoring two runs in the eighth and three in the ninth, thanks to a three-run homer by
Nic Hernandez.
Wyatt Shackleford pitched the final inning in relief, notching two strikeouts.
The series concludes at Scolinos Field on Saturady with a doubleheader scheduled for 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.
