Broncos Survive Late Game Rally by Otters, Win 11-8

SEASIDE, Calif. – In the final game of the series, the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team finally found the offense they were looking for as they survived a late-game push by Cal State Monterey Bay to win 11-8 at the Otter Sports Complex.

The Broncos get back to .500 on the year as they improve to 16-16 overall and 12-9 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, while the Otters fall to 19-11, 12-7 CCAA.

Frankie Nogales started things off for the Broncos in the first inning with a grounder to the left side, scoring Chris Stratton. Cody Martin came around to score later in the inning after a wild pitch, giving the Broncos a quick 2-0 lead.

Henry Omana had a strong outing on the mound for CPP, pitching seven innings with only three hits and one earned run. Tallying his second win of the season, he brought his season total in strikeouts to 54, collecting seven on the day.

The Broncos did a majority of their damage in the fourth inning, totaling six runs to go up 8-1. Nic Hernandez singled towards centerfield to score two runs followed by a two-RBI double by Brennan McKenzie.

McKenzie finished 2-for-5 on the day with three RBIs and two doubles while Hernandez and Nogales both finished with two RBIs on the day.

Down 10-1 in the eighth inning, the Otters found a little fight left as they scored five runs in the inning, three of them coming from bases loaded walks.

With the bases loaded and the lead cut to 10-6, Ryan Alsworth came in in relief, escaping the inning without another run. He finished the day pitching 1 1/3 innings with two hits, one earned run and a strikeout to earn his third save of the season.

The Broncos play host to Cal State East Bay next weekend as they return to Scolinos Field for a three-game series starting on Saturday, Apr. 8.
