POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team had a strong start to their three-game series with Cal State East Bay, sweeping Saturday's doubleheader with scores of 4-3 and 10-5.
The Broncos improve to 18-16 overall on the year and 14-9 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
Game One: CPP 4, CSUEB 3
Pitching the first complete game of the season for the Broncos, right-hander
Jeff Bain picked up his fourth win of the season, allowing only four hits and three runs. He tallied seven strikeouts as he improved to 4-2 on the year.
The Broncos jumped ahead in the first inning with three straight hits as
Frankie Nogales singled to bring home
Chris Stratton.
CPP added to their lead in the fifth inning as
Cody Martin had a sacrifice fly to score Stratton for his second run followed by another sacrifice fly by
Daniel Pitts.
Nogales finished with three hits while Stratton and
Jason Padlo finished with two hits each.
The Pioneers made some noise in the sixth inning with a three-run home run to tie the game, but the Broncos answered back immediately with an RBI single through the left side by
Jacob Bernardy.
Game Two: CPP 10, CSUEB 5
Nogales gave the Broncos an early lead in game two as well, singling to score Stratton in the first inning.
Cal State East Bay launched two balls over the fence in the second inning, including a two run homer by Daniel Goodrich to give the visitors a 3-1 advantage.
Kyle Dohy started on the mound for the Broncos, going six innings with seven hits, three runs and three strikeouts. Dohy also picked up his fourth win of the season as he improves to 4-1 overall.
Padlo got things going for the Broncos in the fourth inning with a solo home run to left field. CPP added three more runs in the inning to take a 5-3 lead.
The Broncos' biggest inning of the day came in the fifth as they sealed the victory with five more runs, totaling seven hits in the inning as they batted around the lineup.
Martin finished with two hits and three RBIs while Stratton had three hits and two RBIs.
The Broncos and the Pioneers close out the series Sunday at Scolinos Field with first pitch set for 11 a.m.
