AZUSA, Calif. – Going extra innings in their second consecutive NCAA West Regional game, the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team was unable to hang on to a late lead, losing to No. 3 Dixie State 6-5 in the 10
th
inning on Friday afternoon at the Cougar Baseball Complex.
In a game that started as a pitcher's duel, the Trailblazers grabbed an early lead in the third inning after a single through the left side broke the 0-0 tie.
Henry Omana started on the mound for CPP, tossing 8 1/3 innings with 10 hits, five runs and nine strikeouts.
The Broncos found their first run of the day in the sixth inning when
Jason Padlo singled up the middle, bringing in
Daniel Pitts for the score.
After falling behind 3-1 in the seventh inning, CPP stormed back in the eighth to take the lead, scoring four runs off of three home runs.
Cody Martin and Pitts hit back-to-back solo shots while
Brennan McKenzie finished things off with a two-run blast following a single by Padlo.
Padlo led the Broncos with three hits while Martin and
Chris Stratton each had two.
With two outs in the ninth, Dixie State's Tyler Baker found a two-run double to left field, sending the game to extra innings.
The Broncos have now gone to extra innings in four of their last six tournament games, going back to the CCAA conference tournament a week ago.
CPP will continue play Saturday morning, facing the loser of #2 Azusa Pacific vs. #4 UC San Diego at 11 a.m. If the Broncos win, they will play again at 7 p.m.
