AZUSA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team saw their season come to an end after an amazing second half run, losing to #2 Azusa Pacific 10-1 on the third day of the 2017 NCAA Division II West Regional on Saturday at the Cougar Baseball Complex.
The Broncos finish the 2017 season with an overall record of 34-22, winning the CCAA South Division, picking up two wins in the conference tournament and one win in the NCAA West Region.
The Cougars pounced on the Broncos early, scoring three runs in the first inning before a second inning grand slam gave the host a 7-0 advantage.
Kyle Dohy started on the mound for CPP, tossing 3 2 /3 innings with six hits, four walks and four strikeouts. Pitching in relief was
Peter Beattie who went 2 1/3 innings with only one hit while
Matthew Grier closed out the game with three hits in two innings.
The Broncos got on the board in the sixth inning after
Chris Stratton singled to score
Jacob Bernardy after he opened with a leadoff double.
With two on base and no outs in the inning, Azusa worked a double play to keep the Broncos hopes of a comeback down.
Bernardy finished 2-of-3 on the day to lead the Broncos while Stratton ended with one hit an RBI.
