POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team reached their longest win streak of the season, totaling 10 games after Friday's doubleheader sweep of San Francisco State at Scolinos Field.
The Broncos (30-18, 26-11 CCAA) have clinched the South Division with only one game left to play in the regular season schedule.
Jeff Bain was dominant in his game one start, throwing 8 1/3 innings to shut out the Gators while
Frankie Nogales lifted his team to victory in game two, hitting a walk-off single in the 11
th inning to win 3-2.
Game One: CPP 3, SFSU 0
Bain gave up only eight hits in game one, totaling three walks and three strikeouts, improving his season record to 8-2.
Daniel Pitts gave the Broncos the lead early, launching a homerun to left center in the first inning, bringing in
Cody Martin as CPP took a 2-0 lead.
CPP scored again in the third inning as
Chris Stratton rounded third on a wild pitch for the final score of the game.
Wyatt Shackleford finished off the ninth inning for his third save of the season, striking out one batter in the process.
Game Two: CPP 3, SFSU 2
In game two, the Broncos once again took an early lead as
Brennan McKenzie singled up the middle to score
Jason Padlo in the fourth inning for the first score of the game.
The Gators found some much needed offense later in the day as Robbie Carling hit a two-run homerun to take the lead in the fifth inning.
Kyle Dohy started on the mound for CPP in game two, tossing six innings with five hits, two earned runs and eight strikeouts.
In the bottom half of the fifth, CPP tied things up after a sacrifice fly by Pitts that sent
Bryce Graddy in to score.
Peter Beattie and
Matthew Grier each pitched one inning of relief with neither pitcher giving up a run.
With the score still tied heading into the bottom of the 11
th inning, Padlo reach base on a fielder's choice before advancing to second after McKenzie forced a walk. With two runners on base, Nogales entered as a pinch hitter, knocking a ball through the right side gap to score the winning run.
CPP and SFSU will close out the regular season tomorrow at Scolinos Field with first pitch set for noon. The Broncos will honor their seven seniors prior to the start of the game.
