POMONA – The Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team ended their first weekend of California Collegiate Athletic Association action without a loss, playing to a 2-2 draw against Cal State Los Angeles on Sunday afternoon.
The tie moves the Broncos to 5-1-1 overall on the year and 1-0-1 in the CCAA.
"Extremely proud of our girls' effort and commitment today against a very physical and talented CSULA team," said Head Coach
Jay Mason. "I thought our movement off the ball improved allowing us to create a number of good chances throughout the game."
The Golden Eagles struck first, opening the scoring with a chip shot just out of reach of a CPP's
Ricki Ives in the 20th minute of play.
Moments later,
Amanda Duran answered back for the Broncos, launching a chip shot of her own from outside the box, landing in the upper corner of the goal for her third score this season.
The Broncos finished with 23 shots on the day while holding CSULA to 12 total shots.
"We need to address some tactical issues but their mentality and team fight were exceptional today."
Roughly three minutes after A. Duran's score, the Broncos took the lead after a foul in the box gave
Daisy Duran the opportunity for a penalty kick, converting the shot for her third goal of the year.
Cal State LA forced the equalizer in the 61st minute, sending the ball on target in the box when a last chance clearance attempt landed in the net, sending the game to overtime.
The Broncos' offense came out firing in the first overtime period, tallying five shots to only one from the visitors.
D. Duran led the Broncos with nine shots while Ives finished with four saves to keep CPP without a loss in conference play.
"Looking forward to a week of recovery, reflection, and improvement."
The Broncos return to Kellogg Field next weekend as they host Cal State East Bay and Cal State Monterey Bay for the second round of conference games on Sept. 22 and 24.
