POMONA – In a defensive battle throughout the night, the Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team edged out Cal State East Bay to earn a 1-0 victory on Friday to remain unbeaten in California Collegiate Athletic Association competition.
The Broncos (6-1-1, 2-0-1 CCAA) outshot the Pioneers 8-4 with both teams tallying three shots on goal as CPP earned their fifth shutout of the season.
"I'm very proud of our girls' fight in the second half tonight, we were able to find a way through a very physical and determined CSUEB team," said Head Coach
Jay Mason. "They brought an energy and toughness we haven't seen so far this year."
After playing to a scoreless tie in the first half of play, the Broncos finally broke the defense of the Pioneers in the 64
th minute as
Daisy Duran launched a corner kick into the far side of the box, finding
Alison Kung who headed the ball just under the crossbar to give her team the lead.
"We have been talking about our conversion rate on set pieces this week and tonight that proved to be the difference."
Amanda Duran led the Broncos with three shots while Kung finished with two. The Broncos also earned four corner kicks while not giving up one to CSUEB.
"We need to regroup, recover, and refocus for another strong CCAA opponent in CSU Monterey Bay."
The Broncos will be back at Kellogg Field on Sunday as they host the Otters of Monterey Bay at 11:30 a.m.
