SAN DIEGO – It took nearly two hours for the first score to happen as the Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team downed Point Loma 1-0 in double overtime on the road, Wednesday.
"Extremely proud of the effort our team put forth today against a well-coached and committed team in Point Loma," said head coach
Jay Mason.
With under three minutes to go,
Amanda Duran ran down the left side of the field, taking a pass from
Ally La Carra-Platt and sinking the ball into the net from 20-yards out to give her team a victory.
"I'm very happy for Amanda as her work rate and desire today was not going to be denied," added Mason.
The Broncos finished with nine shots, four on target, while holding the Sea Lions to only five shots in the game.
Ricki Ives played all 110 minutes in goal for CPP, collecting three saves on the day for her third shutout in as many games. The Broncos remain as the only team in the California Collegiate Athletic Association to not allow a goal this season.
Duran led CPP in shots with four while
Samantha Putnam finished two shots on goal.
"We had a number of players step up today which shows our team's mentality is strong. Excited about the challenges ahead and eager to see this team grow."
The Broncos host their home opener on Saturday, Sept. 9, as they welcome in Cal Baptist at 7 p.m.
