SAN FRANCISCO – The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball split the final day of the 2017 NCAA DII West Regional Showcase, sweeping the University of Hawaii at Hilo before falling to Biola University in four on Saturday.
The Broncos leave the weekend winning three out of four contests to improve to 4-4 overall on the season.
Match One: Cal Poly Pomona 3, Hawaii – Hilo 0
The Broncos earned their second straight sweep in match two of today, downing the University of Hawaii – Hilo in straight sets 25-19, 25-18, 25-17.
Desi Martin led the CPP with a match high 13 kills on 18 swings while
Chloe Fields-Owens finished with eight kills.
Kay Powell tallied 18 assists while
Alina Smith finished the night with 16 as the Broncos earned a team hitting percentage of .248.
After trailing midway through the first set, CPP collected the next seven points to pull away from Hilo and take the early advantage.
The Broncos held Hilo to their lowest attacking percentage in set two at .071. CPP jumped out to a 15-10 lead and continued to string multiple points together, taking a two-set lead.
Samantha Figueroa compiled a season high 25 digs to lead both teams while Fields-Owens added 10 digs of her own.
CPP sealed the victory in the third and final set, ending the match on a 7-2 run to beat Hilo 25-17.
Match: One: Cal Poly Pomona 1, Biola 3
CPP battled with Biola University all night in one of the closest matches of the weekend. The Broncos jumped out to an early lead, taking set one 25-21.
Three Broncos recorded double digit kills with Martin leading with 13,
Andrea Bosnic totaling 12 and Fields-Owens finishing with 11.
CPP posted one of their best hitting performance of the year, finishing with an attacking percentage of .301 overall.
The Eagles tied things up after winning the second set 25-21 before making a comeback in the third set to edge out CPP 26-24 and take the lead two sets to one.
Fields-Owens also tallied a team high 13 digs while Smith collected 29 assists for her second largest total of the season.
With the nonconference schedule over with, the Broncos begin California Collegiate Athletic Association play next Friday, Sept. 15 as they travel to Sonoma State.
