Second Half Push Lifts Broncos to 69-55 Win Over Cal State Los Angeles

POMONA – With a second-half surge, the Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team surpassed Cal State Los Angeles, winning 69-55 on Saturday night at Kellogg Arena.


THE BASICS:

HOW IT HAPPENED:
-    Both teams traded off buckets to a 12-12 tie before Cal State Los Angeles pulled ahead, building a 28-21 lead before heading into the half with a 29-26 advantage.
-    The Broncos dominated the paint, tallying 36 points in the key while outrebounding the Golden Eagles 47-28.
-    CPP shot 41 percent from the field while holding CSULA to a mark of 35 percent.
-    The Broncos took the lead back in the second half, leading 39-36 before a 16-4 gave them command for the rest of the contest.
-    CPP took their largest lead at 63-45 with just over five minutes to play in the game, hanging on to the win to sweep the weekend. 

KEY PERFORMERS: 
-    William Christmas put in a dominating performance, tallying 25 points along with 12 rebounds to earn a double-double.
-    Jordan Ogundiran played an all-around game, finishing with 11 points, six rebounds and six assists along with three steals.
-    Phoenix Shackelford added 10 points while Daylan Lawrence finished with six points, each adding three rebounds.

OUTSIDE THE BOX: 
-    With their second straight win, the Broncos remain at the top of the league standings with an 11-2 conference record.
-    In 53 percent of CPP's games this season, the Broncos have held their opponent to less than 60 points in the game, ranking first in the CCAA in points allowed.

COMING UP NEXT:
The Broncos will head back out on the road as they travel to the Bay Area to take on Cal State East Bay and Cal State Monterey Bay beginning Friday, Jan. 26.
