POMONA -- Riding the momentum of the Kellogg Arena electricity, the 16th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team continued its success against Top 10 teams, knocking off No. 9 Cal State L.A. in four sets (25-16, 23-25, 25-23, 25-23) on Friday night in Pomona.
The Broncos (20-3) jump into sole possession of second place in the CCAA South Division with a 13-2 record in league play, one game behind Cal State San Bernardino for the top spot. The Golden Eagles (20-2, 12-2 CCAA) snapped their seven-match win streak and suffered just their second loss of the season.
The match was as close as one could get. It featured 36 tie scores and 16 lead changes throughout the two hour, three minute affair as the final three sets on the night were decided by the minimum two points. The Broncos once again came out on first in the opening frame, however, cruising to the 25-16 win to grab the early match lead.
Cal State L.A. responded in the second set to take a 10-4 lead before Cal Poly Pomona began to chip away, eventually pulling even at 21-21 and again at 22-22 before CSULA buckled down to score three of the next four points on a couple of kills by Daisy Crenshaw and a block by Alejandra Negron to even the match at one set apiece.
In the third, CPP grabbed a four-point lead early at 9-5, but CSULA rebounded to force 10 ties the rest of the way, but the Broncos prevailed in the end, scoring three of the final four points on two kills by
Kristen Hamlin and one by
Andrea Bosnic to pull ahead 2-1 in the match. The events of the fourth set was nearly identical to the third, though it featured 14 of the 36 ties in the match. The final tie came again at 22-22, but a CSULA service error, a kill from Bosnic, a kill from the Golden Eagles' Crenshaw and finally a kill from Hamlin clinched the match for the Broncos.
Hamlin and Bosnic led the way for CPP with 15 kills while
Jenna Goldsberry roped in 11. Bosnic and Goldsberry both added double-digit digs with 11 and 10, respectively, as
Alex Bollier led the way with 20.
Chloe Fields-Owens also had a big night on the back line, making 11 digs and acing one serve. Hamlin turned away seven CSULA attacks, contributing to the eight team blocks by CPP.
Kira Zimmerman notched 47 assists, eight of which went to
Desi Martin.
Cal State L.A. was led by the 21 kills of Karla Santos, who was served 67 times. She also led the visitors with 22 digs defensively.
Cal Poly Pomona will play its final home game of the 2018 season Saturday night when it hosts Cal State Dominguez Hills at 7:00 pm at Kellogg Arena. The Broncos will honor five seniors prior to the match --
