PETALUMA, Calif. -- Despite playing a man down for the final 50 minutes of action, the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team overwhelmed host Sonoma State Friday afternoon, earning a 3-1 victory at the Petaluma Community Sports Fields in Petaluma. 

The Broncos have won four straight matches (and five of their last six) in improving to 6-4-0 overall and moving into a tie for second place in the CCAA standings with 12 points at 4-1.  The Seawolves (2-6-3) have lost five of their last six and are still winless in conference play at 0-5-2.

It took just 10 minutes for the Broncos to score their first of three goals on the day when Benny Lindahl corralled a punchout attempt by the SSU goalkeeper on a Cyro Oliveira corner kick into the box and sent it home for the 1-0 lead.

Neither team would score the rest of the first half, but CPP would go a man down in the 40th minute when Alon Grod was issued a straight red card.

The Seawolves took advantage of the Broncos' disadvantage in the 59th minute when Leonardo Gonzalez-Perez got one past CPP keeper Jakob Hansen to knot the score at 1-1.

The deadlock didn't last three and a half minutes before Brian Peek got in behind the defense on a pass up from Jimmie Villalobos, and Peek won the one-on-one battle with Seawolf netminder Arturo Ornelas for the go-ahead score at 62:10.  Villalobos continued to dominate opposing defenses when he scored his seventh goal of the season at 75:37 to give CPP a 3-1 lead and put the game out of reach from the host Seawolves.

Sonoma led 12-9 in the shot department as Hansen came up with six saves for CPP in the contest.  On the other end of the field, Ornelas made three saves for SSU.

Cal Poly Pomona will continue its trek north to faceoff with Humboldt State in Arcata on Sunday.  Kickoff is set for 2:00 pm.
