Broncos Rally To Defeat 'Jacks For 5th Straight Win

ARCATA, Calif. -- After allowing a goal in the 16th minute, the Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team got scores from Gabriel Castillo just before halftime and from Jason Ramos with less than three minutes to go in regulation to complete a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over host Humboldt State on Sunday afternoon at College Creek Field in Arcata.

The Broncos have won five straight matches, improving to 7-4 overall and remains in a tie for second place in the CCAA standings with 15 points at 5-1 with Cal State San Bernardino.  Both CPP and CSUSB trail first place Cal State L.A. (7-0-1, 22 points) by seven points with six regular season matches to go.

Cal Poly Pomona pummeled the Humboldt State (4-6-2, 1-5-2 CCAA) defense all afternoon, outshooting the hosts 27-13, 20 of the 27 shots coming on goal.  However, it was Humboldt to strike first, when Gus Baxter challenged CPP goalkeeper Jakob Hansen for the loose ball in front of the net and it was Baxter that was able to make contact first and put the ball into the back of the net before Baxter and Hansen collided, forcing both from the contest with injuries.

With less than four minutes to go before halftime and the Broncos down a goal, Castillo knotted the score at 1-1 when he took a center pass from Omer Green and found the back of the nylon at 41:53.

Though CPP took 16 of the 24 shots in the second half, neither team was able to find the go-ahead goal until Ramos scored his first goal as a Bronco with 2:54 left in the contest.

Humboldt got off one more shot attempt in the 89th minute, but it would sail wide left allowing Pomona to snag the one-goal victory.

Prior to Hansen's injury, he made one save in his 16 minutes of action before Skyler Gibbons-Stovall came on to see action for the second time in his career, making six saves in the win.  Humboldt's Bryan Hernandez made 14 stops on the other side.

Cal Poly Pomona returns home Friday to begin its final homestand of the season, taking on Cal State San Marcos at 12:30 pm at Kellogg Stadium in Pomona.  The Broncos will then play their final regular season home game of 2018 on Sunday at 11:30 am against UC San Diego.
