Broncos Earn Thanksgiving Eve Win In Irvine

IRVINE, Calif. -- Dominique Dotson and Jordyn Shane led the way with 18 and 17 points, respectively, as the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team earned a convincing 76-65 victory over Concordia-Irvine Wednesday night at CU Arena in Irvine.

The Broncos will head into CCAA play with a 3-1 overall record.  The Eagles fall to 0-4, all of their losses to CCAA South Division teams so far this season.

The Broncos got off to a slow start, falling behind 18-9 through the first quarter of play, thanks to a cold shooting performance that saw CPP hit just 15.8 percent of its shots on 3 of 19 attempts.  However, the Broncos turned things around in the second period, connecting on 76.9 percent (10 of 13) to outscore the Eagles 27-16 and take a 36-34 lead at the half, which was capped by a last-second layup by Shane.

Late in the third quarter, Concordia-Irvine hit a couple of free throws at the 2:43 mark to take a one point 43-42 advantage, but Cal Poly Pomona went on a 7-0 run in less than a minute and eventually went into the final quarter up five at 51-46.

With 7:17 left, Kasey Smit knocked down a three-pointer to stretch the CPP lead to 10 points (59-49), however, the Eagles chipped away and got within two points (61-59) with 4:43 remaining, but the Broncos dug deep and rallied for 10 unanswered points en route to the 11-point win.

Crystal Malveaux also scored in double-figures Wednesday with 12 while Smit and Monica Todd ended with eight points.  In the end, the Broncos hit on 43.9 percent of their shots (29 of 66).

Concordia-Irvine was led by the 18 points and 13 rebounds of Michaela Vanderklugt.

Cal Poly Pomona will head to the Bay Area next weekend, opening CCAA play Thursday (Nov. 29) at San Francisco State.  Tip off is set for 5:30 pm.
