Men's Soccer Falls In CCAA Title Game, 2-0

LA JOLLA, Calif. -- The Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team held the conference scoring leaders scoreless for the first 83 minutes of the contest while seeing its fair share of opportunities on the offensive side of the field, but Cal State L.A. managed to score a pair of goals in the final seven minutes to capture the 2018 CCAA Men's Soccer Championship Tournament title with a 2-0 win over CPP on Sunday afternoon at Triton Soccer Stadium in La Jolla.

With the loss, the Broncos fall to 13-6 this season and will await their NCAA postseason fate as the 2018 NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Championship Tournament field will be announced via a live selection show at NCAA.com Monday at 3:00 pm.  CPP entered the week ranked at No. 6 in the West Region and will need to remain in the Top 6 in order to qualify for the NCAA tournament for the fourth consecutive year.

The Golden Eagles (14-2-3) earn the CCAA's automatic bid into the NCAA tournament by winning their second straight CCAA tournament title (and their fourth in the last eight years).

The match stayed scoreless until the 84th minute when the Golden Eagles broke through. The scoring sequence started with a Cal State LA free kick that was blocked. Morten Bjoershol got to the rebound and sent it back into the box, where Tim Klefisch sent it ahead to Robin Lindahl, who quickly put in a right-footed shot for his 11th goal of the season.

Cal State L.A. made it 2-0 in the 87th minute when Carlos Zarate was able to direct a left-footed shot that trickled over the goal-line for his first career-goal at Cal State LA.

While the final score didn't fall in favor of Cal Poly Pomona, the Broncos were inches from swinging the momentum their way early.  Just 36 seconds into the contest, Brian Peek got off a shot from point blank range that clipped the crossbar before falling behind the goal.  In the 23rd minute, Jimmie Villalobos fired an attempt off the post before CPP was awarded three corner kicks all in a span of three minutes, midway through the opening stanza, highlighting what was a very physical, back-and-forth first half.

Both teams attempted the same amount of shots in both halves, but only CSULA was able to find the net, converting two of their final three shots on the afternoon.

For their efforts, CPP's Gabriel Castillo, Nadeer Ghantous and Villalobos were named to the All-Tournament Team, it was announced following the conclusion of play on Sunday.
