TURLOCK, Calif. -- Jordan Ogundiran and
William Christmas each scored a team-high 14 points, but the No. 7-ranked Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team suffered a 78-71 loss in overtime to Stanislaus State on Saturday night in Turlock.
The Broncos suffer their first loss of the season, dropping to 3-1 (1-1 CCAA). The Warriors rise to 4-3 (1-2 CCAA).
With 14 points on Saturday, Ogundiran eclipsed the 1,000-point milestone for his career, now sporting 1,004 points in 89 career games in the Green and Gold.
CPP led for nearly 28 minutes of the contest, including a six-point advantage at 60-54 with 1:43 left in regulation after Christmas hit a pair of free throws. However, Stanislaus' Darius Scott drained three-pointers on back-to-back possessions to even the score at 60-60 with 33 seconds left. After a Cal Poly Pomona timeout, the Broncos went down the floor, paused for the final shot, and with the shot clock running down,
Riley Schaefer missed his three-point attempt, but
Nikhil Peters grabbed the offensive rebound, put up a shot that missed, then Ogundiran corralled the ball, but was unable to get a final shot off before the buzzer, sending the game to overtime.
Playing in overtime for the second straight game, the Broncos opened the extra frame on a made jumper by Ogundiran to take a 62-60 lead. One free throw by both teams made it 63-61, then with 2:45 left, the Warriors again hit three-pointers on consecutive possessions to take a four-point lead at 67-63. Schaefer connected on a three-ball of his own with 1:35 left to bring CPP within one at 67-66, but Stanislaus finished out the game on a 11-5 run, sealing the host's win at the free throw line down the stretch.
In addition to Ogundiran and Christmas scoring in double-figures, Schaefer and
Phoenix Shackelford also posted double-digit points with 11 each. The Broncos shot 38.5 percent from the floor on 25 of 65 shooting, including 9 of 30 (.300) from long range.
On the other side of the floor, Stanislaus State made half of its 58 shots, also hitting nine three-pointers. Andy Cleaves led all scorers with 21 points while Darius Scott poured in 17.
Cal Poly Pomona will continue its five-game road trip next Saturday with a game at Sonoma State in Rohnert Park. Tipoff is set for 3:00 pm. The Broncos will then wrap up the road trip on Wednesday, Dec. 19 at Cal State San Marcos with a new start time of 5:00 pm. CPP won't return home until Chico State comes to Kellogg Arena on Dec. 29.
