SAN MARCOS, Calif. -- The ninth-ranked Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team used an all-around effort to dominate host Cal State San Marcos, 66-41, Wednesday night at the Sports Center in San Marcos.
The Broncos rise to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the CCAA. The Cougars stumble to 3-8 (0-5 CCAA).
Neither team broke the scoreless tie until the 17:19 mark of the first half when CPP's
Justin Young hit a mid-range jumper. CSUSM scored on their next offensive possession, but the Broncos went on an 8-0 run and never looked back. In fact, Cal Poly Pomona went on a 17-4 run during the last 5:54 of the first half to take a 31-13 lead into the intermission. During that span, CPP went 6 for 11 from the floor, had three steals, and five different Broncos scored, led by six from
Phoenix Shackelford.
The CPP defense continued to shine in the second half as it didn't allow a made field goal for 11 minutes; the Cougars failed to make a shot from the floor from the 4:57 mark of the first half until 13:54 on the clock in the second half, allowing the visitors to continue expanding their lead to as much as 30 points, 49-19 lead with 9:10 left in the contest before settling for the 25-point win.
William Christmas ended the night with a team-high 13 points in 26 minutes of work. Young finished with 11 points, and seven other Broncos found their way into the box score as well. As a team, CPP connected on 45.5 percent of its shots (25 for 55) while holding CSUSM to just 30 percent (15 of 50). The Broncos also recorded seven blocked shots.
Cal State San Marcos was led by Bryce Sloan who had a game-high 18 points.
Cal Poly Pomona will take the NCAA Division II-mandated seven-day break from practice and competition before returning to Kellogg Arena for its first CCAA home game Saturday, December 29th against Chico State. Tipoff is set for 7:30 pm.
