Furious Rally Falls Short In Loss To CSUSM

SAN MARCOS, Calif. -- Jordyn Shane poured in 27 points Wednesday afternoon, but her half-court heave at the buzzer banged off the back iron after the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team rallied from a 15-point deficit late in the third quarter only to fall 70-68 to host Cal State San Marcos at the Sports Center in San Marcos.

The Broncos suffered their first conference defeat, falling to 3-1 in the CCAA and 7-2 overall, snapping their six-game win streak in the process.  The Cougars improved to 6-3 (3-2 CCAA).

CSUSM built its largest lead of the contest at the 2:44 mark of the third quarter when Emma Forel made a layup to make it 48-33 in favor of the Cougars.  However, CPP went on an 8-0 run to close out the third stanza to enter the fourth and final period with a score of 48-41.

Cal State San Marcos kept the pressure on the visitors, pushing its lead back up to as much as 13 points with 7:36 left, and even held control with an 11-point advantage with 4:32 to play.  From that point on, the Broncos outscored the Cougars 16-9 in the final minutes of action, due in part by CSUSM hitting just five of their 13 free throws down the stretch.

With only seconds to play, Mylah Andrada banked in a turn-around three-pointer to put CPP within just one point.  On CSUSM's next possession, the Broncos quickly fouled with 1.9 left on the clock, and the Cougars' Dynnah Buckner hit her first free throw before missing the second.  Shane grabbed the rebound, sprinted down court and threw up her half-court shot right in front of the scorer's table as the final buzzer sounded and nearly buried it, but it hit off the back of the rim and away from the bucket.

Shane's 27 points led all scorers on the afternoon while Rebecca Islas added 15 and Monica Todd chipped in 10 in the loss. Shane scored 12 of her 27 from the charity stripe. The Broncos were held to just 31.7 percent from the floor on 20 of 63 shooting while the Cougars were 46.6 percent on 27 of their 58 attempts.

From the line, Cal State San Marcos made just 11 of their 30 free throws, an efficiency of 36.7 percent, while CPP was 23 of 29 (79.3 percent) on their shots from the line.

Cal Poly Pomona will take the NCAA Division II-mandated seven-day break from practice and competition before returning to Kellogg Arena for its first CCAA home game Saturday, December 29th against Chico State.  Tipoff is set for 5:30 pm.
