ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- Rebecca Islas went for team-highs of 25 points and 10 rebounds as the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team held off Sonoma State for a 78-69 victory on Saturday afternoon at The Wolves' Den in Rohnert Park.
With the victory, head coach Danelle Bishop coached her 300th career win as a head coach at the collegiate level, moving her to a 16-year mark of 300-166, 162 of those wins coming as the head coach at Cal Poly Pomona. The Broncos also remain unbeaten in the CCAA at 3-0 and extend their win streak to five games, rising to 6-1 overall in 2018-19. The Seawolves fell to 3-5 (1-4 CCAA).
After falling behind 5-0 to start the matinee, CPP scored 10 unanswered points to reverse a five-point deficit into a five-point lead just prior to the first media timeout of the opening quarter. The Broncos would lead by as much as seven points a minute later, but the Seawolves rallied to knot the score at 16-all and 19-all, but were never able to snatch the lead. It wasn't until the 4:37 mark of the second period that SSU regained a lead on a three-pointer by Serena Santos that made it 27-26 in favor of the hosts. Another minute later, Sonoma enjoyed a four-point advantage at 31-27 with 2:44 to play before the intermission, but Cal Poly Pomona 6-0 run to end the half and lead 33-31.
The second half proved to be another see-saw battle as neither team managed a lead of more than six the rest of the way, however, it was CPP to stay out in front for all but 1:42 of the final two quarters; the final lead held by SSU was at 56-55 with eight minutes and change left. While the Broncos kept trying to run away, the Seawolves stayed close, coming within four points at 72-68 with 53 seconds on the clock, but that's as close as they would get as CPP sealed the win at the line, going 4 for 4 in the final moments to win 78-69.\
Islas connected on 7 of 17 shots, including four three-pointers and seven made throws from the line.
Dominique Dotson chipped in with 14 points and
Jordyn Shane had 10.
Monica Todd added eight points and nine rebounds in the win. Despite being held to just 37.9 percent from the floor, Cal Poly Pomona outscored Sonoma State 25-2 in points off turnovers; the Seawolves had 18 miscues and the Broncos gave the ball away just nine times.
Sonoma's Kylie Kiech led the Seawolves with 19 points and Ugochi Anudokem turned in a 16-point, 17-rebound effort in the loss.
Cal Poly Pomona will return home and briefly step outside of conference play next Saturday, hosting Central Washington at Kellogg Arena at 2:00 pm.
