POMONA -- Riding a 21-point, 17-rebound effort by
Rebecca Islas along with the four other starters scoring in double-figures, the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team earned a huge non-conference victory over visiting Central Washington Saturday afternoon at Kellogg Arena in Pomona.
The Broncos have won six straight contests rising to 7-1 this season. The Wildcats of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, meanwhile, fell to 6-2.
Both teams fought through seven ties and 14 lead changes in the ballgame even though CPP lead for more than 31 of the 40 minutes on Saturday. Central Washington got to within three points on a layup with 9;22 remaining in regulation at 61-58, but Cal Poly Pomona went on a deflating 9-0 run over the next 4:48 to take a 70-58 lead with under five minutes to play.
However, the Wildcats made things interesting with a 17-8 run on their own to trail by just three points at 78-75 with 21 seconds left, but the Broncos hit three of their next four free throws in the final moments to all but put the game away.
CPP turned 17 Central Washington turnovers into 26 points while taking care of the ball on offense, giving the ball back just eight times (CWU only turned the eight miscues into four points). In terms of shooting, the hosts connected on 44.1 percent of their shots (30 for 68) while the visitors from Ellensburg, Wash., hit 45.7 percent of their attempts (32 of 70).
Islas recorded her fifth double-double of the season, grabbing her season-high in rebounds with the aforementioned 17.
Monica Todd scored 15 points,
Kasey Smit had 12 points and both
Jordyn Shane and
Dominique Dotson ended with 11 apiece.
For Central Washington, Alexis Pana led the way with 19 points and seven assists and Kaelie Flores had 18 points and nine rebounds.
Cal Poly Pomona will return to conference play Wednesday at Cal State San Marcos. The afternoon tipoff is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
