Hernandez Homers in Broncos 3-1 Win Over Concordia

POMONA - Behind a home run from Nic Hernandez, the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team split the two-game series with Concordia University (Calif.), winning 3-1 on the road.

THE BASICS:
Final: Cal Poly Pomona 1, Concordia University (Calif.) 1
Records: CPP (3-3, 0-0 CCAA), CUI (3-7, 0-0 PacWest)
Location: Irvine, Calif.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
-    For the second game in a row for these teams, offense was hard to come by with both teams hitless through the first two innings.
-    The Broncos broke the slump in the third inning as Cody Martin picked up the first hit of the day after Hunter Tidwell reached base on an error to give CPP two runners on base.
-    Hernandez drove in both players with one swing, crushing a ball past the right field fence.
-    Concordia scored their only run of the contest in the seventh inning scoring a fielder's choice.

KEY PERFORMERS:
-    Ryan Alsworth picked up his first win of the season on Friday, tossing six scoreless innings while giving up only three hits and tallying five strikeouts.
-    Nick Peifer and Martin both finished with two hits while Ben Mora picked up a save, throwing one inning with no hits.

OUTSIDE THE BOX:
-    CPP snapped a three-game losing streak against the Eagles, picking up their first win since the 2016 campaign.

COMING UP NEXT:
The Broncos will make a return to Scolinos Field during their four-game series with Cal State San Marcos to kick off conference play, playing at home on Friday and Saturday, beginning Feb. 23, before playing a doubleheader in San Marcos on Sunday.
