Broncos Advance to Final with Win in Overtime Thriller

POMONA - The Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team will continue their title run as they advanced to the championship round of the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament with a 67-60 overtime win over San Francisco State.


THE BASICS:

HOW IT HAPPENED:
-    Offense was hard to come by for the Broncos to start the game, scoring five points midway through the first half as they shot 2-for-13.
-    CPP closed out the remainder of the half with a 16-5 run, capped off by a three-pointer from Riley Schaefer to take a 27-24 lead into the half.
-    CPP scored the first five points of the second half, stretching their lead to double-digits 34-24.
-    The Broncos edged out SFSU in rebounds 44-39 and won the turnover battle, forcing 18 turnovers while giving up 11 of their own.
-    Down 39-29, the Gators fought back to tie the game, tying it 46-46 before taking the lead at 49-48.
-    With just under three minutes to play, SFSU scored six straight to take a 58-52 advantage with 1:52 on the clock. 
-    Back-to-back buckets by Schaefer cut the lead to one basket before William Christmas forced a steal and charged the lane for the tying bucket, sending the game into overtime.
-    The Broncos outscored San Francisco 9-2 in the extra period as Jordan Ogundiran scored six of those points to lead his team to the victory.

KEY PERFORMERS: 
-    Christmas led the Broncos with 13 points while grabbing eight rebounds along with four steals and four assists to complete an all-around performance.
-    Also tallying double-digits points was Schaefer with 12 points and Ogundiran with 10 points
-    Jeff Nibo added seven points while Chris Sullivan and Justin Young contributed six points each.

OUTSIDE THE BOX:
-    The Broncos advance to the final round for the first time since the 2014-15 season when they won the CCAA tournament title with an overtime victory over Chico State.
-    In the last eight seasons, CPP is 3-0 in overtime games during the tournament and 4-0 against the Gators.

COMING UP NEXT:
The Broncos will await their opponent as they face the winner of #2 Chico State and #3 UC San Diego in the championship game slated for 5:05 p.m. on Saturday, March 3.
