Broncos End CCAA Tournament Run with 5-1 Loss on Championship Saturday

STOCKTON –  The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team saw their special run come to an end in the championship game of the California Collegiate Athletic Association Postseason Tournament, falling to UC San Diego 5-1 on Saturday at Banner Island Ballpark.
 
 
THE BASICS:

GAME SUMMARY:
  • Nic Hernandez started things off in the first inning, blasting a solo home run over the center field wall to give CPP a quick 1-0 lead.
  • After beginning the third inning with a fly out, UCSD strung together five singles in a row, scoring two runs, before hitting a sacrifice fly to center field to take a 3-1 lead.
  • The Tritons added two more runs in the fourth, scoring on a double to right center followed by an RBI single to down the right field line.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, the Broncos managed runners on first and second with one out in the inning but couldn't capitalize, hitting into a double play.
  • Still down 5-1 in the bottom of the ninth, the Broncos had a little fight left, leading off with a double before loading the bases with one out in the inning.
  • UCSD closed out the game with two final strikeouts to secure the conference tournament title.
 
KEY PERFORMERS:
  • Austin Isenhart started on the mound for CPP, tossing four 2/3 innings while allowing five runs off of eight hits.
  • Ben Mora pitched three 1/3 innings of relief, allowing only one hit during that time while Brian Conley also pitched one inning with one hit.
  • Bryce Graddy finished with two hits in the contest while Herandez drove in the lone RBI.
 
CCAA All-Tournament Team: The Broncos had four players represented on the CCAA All-Tournament Team in Nic Hernandez, Drew Cowley, Tim Holdgrafer, and Ryan Alsworth.
 
Hernandez tallied six hits, five runs, and five RBIs with two home runs while Cowley finished with seven hits, six runs and two RBIs.
 
Holdgrafer finished with a tournament-high eight strikeouts in his performance against Chico State while Alsworth picked up a win with seven strikeouts.
 
COMING UP NEXT:
The Broncos will await the final NCAA Division II West Region rankings to determine if they receive an at-large bid to the regional tournament.
