IRVINE, Calif. -- Kristen Hamlin went off for 25 kills and added 12 blocks in two games combined, and
Alex Bollier led the defense with 30 digs in six sets, as the Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team earned a pair of convincing 3-0 sweeps to wrap up play at the Concordia Invitational on Saturday in Irvine. The Broncos will head into next weekend's D2 West Region Showcase in Oakland with a 3-1 record.
Hamlin enjoyed an outstanding weekend, firing 47 kills for a .413 hitting percentage, in addition to rejecting 17 attacks in the first four games of the season. Bollier and
Jenna Goldsberry turned in an average of 10 digs a match in the two-day event to lead the Broncos defensive effort.
Kira Zimmerman handed out 108 assists, a clip of 9.82 per set.
In the earlier game Saturday against American International, the Broncos led the first two sets from start to finish, jumping out to a 2-0 lead. Both teams traded points to begin the third set, but CPP went on a 6-0 run to take an 8-3 lead and never looked back to clinch the match win. Hamlin blasted 12 kills with seven blocks to lead the offense.
In the tournament finale against host Concordia-Irvine, Cal Poly Pomona cruised to the 3-0 sweep, holding CUI to only 10, 16 and 9 points in each set, respectively. CPP's defense was stifling, holding the Eagles offense to negative hitting percentages in each of the three sets, eventually holding them to -.073 for the contest. The Broncos, meanwhile, hit .236 as a team, led by double-digit kills from Hamlin (13),
Andrea Bosnic (12) and Goldsberry (10).
Cal Poly Pomona will head up to the Bay Area next Friday and Saturday to compete in the D2 West Region Showcase. Friday's action will pit the Broncos against Humboldt State and Hawaii Pacific before they battle with Holy Names and Stanislaus State on Saturday.
