OAKLAND, Calif. -- Led by the 10-kill effort of
Andrea Bosnic, the Cal Poly Pomona convincingly swept past Humboldt State Friday afternoon 3-0 (25-8, 25-18. 25-22) to open play at the D2 West Region Showcase hosted by Holy Names University in Oakland. Several hours later,
Kristen Hamlin provided the offense with a team-high 12 kills and
Alex Bollier recorded 21 digs, leading the Broncos to their fourth straight 3-0 sweep, this time over Hawaii Pacific.
CPP rises to 5-1 on the year and will wrap up play at the D2 West Region Showcase with a pair of matches Saturday against Holy Names (1:00 pm) and Stanislaus State (5:30 pm).
Cal Poly Pomona 3, Humboldt State 0 (25-8, 25-18, 25-22)
In Friday's opener, the Broncos, who entered the week receiving votes in the AVCA Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll, scored the first eight points of the match before the Lumberjacks could find the scoreboard themselves. It wouldn't stop CPP's momentum, however, as the Broncos poured it on, taking leads of 17-3 and 20-5 before securing the first set win at 25-8.
The second set proved to be more difficult for CPP. Despite leading by scores of 11-7, 15-10 and 17-12, the Broncos surrendered five unanswered points to the 'Jacks to even the set score at 17-17. That's when Cal Poly Pomona turned up the noise once again, scoring the next six points -- and eight of the next nine points -- to pull away for the 25-18 win and the 2-0 match lead.
The third set was even tougher for the Broncos as Humboldt State stayed neck-and-neck almost the entire way. In fact, neither team lead by more than two points until Humboldt was able to hold a three point lead on three occasions, the first being a 17-14 advantage, the last being a 19-16 lead. That's when CPP rallied to score seven straight points to turn a three-point deficit into a four-point lead at 23-19. HSU recorded three of the next four points to make it 24-22, but a Lumberjack service error by Kayla Costello clinched the match win for CPP.
Bosnic led all players with her 10 kills while
Kristen Hamlin and
Ally Wilder chipped in with nine kills.
Jenna Goldsberry and
Alex Bollier tallied 12 and 11 digs, respectively as
Kira Zimmerman passed out 31 assists to go along with seven digs and two service aces.
As a team, Cal Poly Pomona hit .330, marking the second time this season the Broncos have hit better than .300 in a match.
Cal Poly Pomona 3, Hawaii Pacific 0 (25-14, 28-26, 25-12)
The Broncos continued their streak of three-set sweeps late Friday evening, but not without resistance by Hawaii Pacific. After CPP cruised to a 25-14 win in the opening frame, the Broncos found themselves trailing for much of the second set. However, a couple of miscues by HPU late allowed Cal Poly Pomona to regain a 19-17 lead. That would be the last time either team led by more than a point the rest of the set.
The Broncos found themselves facing set point by the Sharks, down 26-25, but kills by
Jenna Goldsberry and Bosnic, followed by a block by
Desi Martin and
Karah Griffiths gave CPP the come-from-behind 28-26 victory to take the 2-0 match lead and effectively deflate the Sharks tires.
Riding that momentum in the third set, Cal Poly Pomona raced out to an 11-3 lead and never looked back, cruising to the match-clinching 25-12 win in the third set.
Hamlin scored a team-best 12 kills while Goldsberry and Bosnic added nine apiece. Zimmerman threw out 33 assists while Bollier tallied a season-best 21 digs from the backline.
