POMONA -- Andrea Bosnic went for 16 kills, 11 digs and three aces in the 2018 home opener to slam the Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team past visiting Sonoma State in convincing fashion (25-12, 26-24, 25-21) on Friday night at Kellogg Arena in Pomona. The Broncos rise to 10-1 overall and remain perfect in conference play at 3-0. The Seawolves suffer their first CCAA loss of the year, falling to 2-1 in league action (6-6 overall).
The first set was over almost just as quick as it started as CPP steamrolled past SSU 25-12. The Broncos hit .321 as a team, but more impressively, held the Seawolves to a -.107 clip.
Jenna Goldsberry led the assault in the opening frame, hitting .429 with four kills while Bosnic and
Ally Wilder chipped in with three kills apiece.
The second set proved to be the most grueling for both teams. It featured a whopping 16 ties and 11 lead changes before it was all said and done. Sonoma nearly evened the match at 1-1 as they would find themselves up 24-22. However, Cal Poly Pomona dug deep, getting a kill by
Kristen Hamlin and forcing two attack errors by SSU before Hamlin sealed the improbable comeback 26-24 win in the second set to lead the match 2-0.
Though the final score of set number three was much closer than the first set, CPP retained the momentum they got from the come-from-behind win the set earlier and also from the raucous crowd on hand in Kellogg Arena. The Seawolves did get within a point at 22-21, but another kill by Hamlin and two more SSU attack errors, including the match-clinching block by
Desi Martin sent the Broncos home with their first sweep of Sonoma State since 2006.
CPP hit .282 as a squad, and defensively, the Broncos racked up a season-high 10 blocks at the net, led by the five assisted blocks and one solo block off the hands of Hamlin. Wilder added four assisted blocks.
Alex Bollier lead all players with 14 digs, which contributed to holding Sonoma to just .118 hitting in the contest.
Cal Poly Pomona returns to the Kellogg Arena hardwood Saturday night when it hosts Humboldt State at 7:00 pm.
