POMONA -- Down 2-1 in the match, the Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team rallied to defeat visiting UC San Diego in a five-set thriller Friday night (23-25, 25-22, 22-25, 25-22, 15-5) at Kellogg Arena in Pomona. The Broncos stretch their win streak to 11 matches, rising to 12-1 overall and remaining unbeaten in CCAA play at 5-0. The Tritons fall to 5-5 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
Kristen Hamlin slammed 21 kills, blocked seven attacks and recorded eight digs to lead all players with 25 points.
Andrea Bosnic pounded out 17 kills, adding 14 digs, and
Jenna Goldsberry chipped in with 13 kills, 14 digs and four blocks. Five players scored double-digit digs, led by the 20 from
Chloe Fields-Owens and
Alex Bollier.
Kira Zimmerman threw out 51 assists and compiled a double-double with 10 digs.
The Broncos finished with 13.0 total blocks and survived the wall of the UCSD front line, which tallied 15.0 total blocks. CPP hit .182 as a squad, holding UCSD to just .119.
After narrowly losing the first set 25-23, Cal Poly Pomona responded with a 25-22 win to tie the match at one set apiece. UC San Diego bounced back for the 25-22 win to control the momentum and the match 2-1. In the fourth set, UCSD took a 20-16 lead, forcing a CPP timeout that turned a four-point deficit into a two-point lead at 22-20. Two straight UCSD points knotted the set at 22-all, but a block by Hamlin and Goldsberry, then kills by each of them secured the fourth set 25-22 and forced the fifth and deciding set in front of a spirited Kellogg Arena crowd.
It was all Broncos in the fifth set. After a CPP service error to make it 5-3, but still in favor of the hosts, the Broncos scored eight straight points en route to the convincing 15-5 win to clinch the match.
UC San Diego was led by the 15 kills from Gina Cortesi and 14 kills from Cindy Tran.
Cal Poly Pomona returns to action Saturday night hosting Cal State San Marcos. First serve in Kellogg Arena is set for 7:00 pm.
