SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. -- The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team held Cal State San Bernardino to its second-lowest hitting percentage of the season (.179), but the Broncos saw their 12-match win streak come to an end with a 3-0 loss to the Coyotes in a battle of nationally-ranked teams Wednesday night at Coussoulis Arena in San Bernardino.
CPP, the 25th-ranked team in Division II, suffers its first CCAA loss of the season, falling to 6-1 in league play (13-2 overall). The No. 2-ranked team in Division II, CSUSB, improved to 14-1 (7-0 CCAA).
The first set started a little rocky for the visiting Broncos as they fell behind 19-13, but after a time out, CPP rallied to score seven of the next eight points to pull even at 20-20. CSU San Bernardino then forced set point at 24-21 and settled for the 25-23 win to open the match.
The Broncos came out on fire in the second set, storming out to a 6-1 lead early, but the hosts rebounded to knot the score at 7-7 before CPP again found itself with some breathing room with a 14-10 advantage. However, CSUSB came back to tie the set up at 17-17, and from then on, neither team would lead by more than one point until the Coyotes turned a 23-22 deficit into a 25-23 win to take the 2-0 match lead.
Like the end of the second set, Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State San Bernardino played extremely close as neither one led by more than two points in the set until it was 13-13 and CSUSB scored five straight points and seven of the next eight in the set en route to the 25-16 match-clinching win.
Jenna Goldsberry and
Kristen Hamlin each led the Broncos with eight kills,
Desi Martin chipped in with six kills and participated in five blocks, and
Alex Bollier scored a match-high 23 digs. CPP hit .148 on offense, marking its second-lowest offensive output of the season in that category.
Cal Poly Pomona heads to Carson on Friday to take on Cal State Dominguez Hills at the Torodome. First serve is set for 7:00 pm.
