CARSON, Calif. -- The 25th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team returned to its winning ways Friday, defeating host Cal State Dominguez Hills in four sets (25-18, 16-25, 25-17, 25-20) at the Torodome in Carson. The Broncos rise to 14-2 overall and remain in second place in the CCAA South Division at 7-1 in conference action. The Toros stumbled to 5-9 overall, remaining winless in the CCAA at 0-6.
The Broncos got another fiery output by
Kristen Hamlin, as the senior pounded 12 kills in 18 attacks with no errors for a .667 hitting percentage, adding two aces and five digs to her name.
Jenna Goldsberry and
Andrea Bosnic each finished with 11 kills apiece, and
Desi Martin chimed in with nine kills and four blocks in the victory.
Kira Zimmerman continued her stellar play, handing out 44 assists to a team that hit .260 on the night, and tallied a double-double with 10 digs.
Alex Bollier had a team-best 16 digs to lead the CPP defense.
After falling behind 5-3 in the opening set, the Broncos went on a 9-2 run to go ahead 12-7, but the Toros answered right back to come within two points at 15-13. That would be as close as they would come as CPP eventually cruised to the 25-18 win in set number one.
The second set was all CSUDH. The hosts jumped out to an insurmountable 18-8 lead and never looked back, taking the set 25-16 and tying the match at one set apiece.
The Broncos responded with a convincing win in set three for the 2-1 match lead, but the fourth set proved to be the most grueling for either team. No team led by more than two points until CPP managed to pull away near the end. After a kill by the Toros' Renee Wheeler to make it 19-18 in favor of Cal Poly Pomona, the Broncos scored six of the next eight points to close out the match with a 25-20 win.
Cal Poly Pomona will take on another tough test Saturday when it heads to Cal State L.A. for a matchup with the 16th-ranked Golden Eagles. CSULA (13-1 overall, 5-1 CCAA) suffered its first loss of the season Friday at the hands of No. 2 Cal State San Bernardino, a 3-0 loss at home. Saturday's match between CPP and CSULA in Los Angeles is set for 7:00 pm.
