POMONA -- The Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team held a hefty 24-6 edge in shots, but visiting Stanislaus State escaped with the 1-0 win over the host Broncos on Friday evening at Kellogg Stadium in Pomona. CPP falls to 4-4-1 overall and 0-2-1 in the CCAA while the Warriors rise to 5-3-2 (2-2-1 CCAA).
The Broncos recorded double-digit shots in both halves Friday, outshooting the Warriors 10-4 in the opening half, followed by a 14-2 effort in the second half, but one of the six shots by Stanislaus proved to be the game-winner when Sadie Ortiz nailed a 30-yard left-footed shot in the 42nd minute.
Stanislaus' goalkeeper Alyssa Herrman was busy between the posts, making eight stops on all eight shots on goal. Herrman also has the goal posts to thank for the shutout, as a shot by
Sommer Larrabee in the 30th minute banged off the right post, and a header by
Natalie Di Angelo in the 47th minute blasted the crossbar, both of which ended up being cleared by the Warrior defense.
Jillian Erwin tallied a team-high five shots, two of which came on frame. Larrabee came off the bench to take four attempts. Netminder
Sydney Williams made three saves for CPP on the other end.
Cal Poly Pomona will return to action Sunday when it hosts Chico State in Kellogg Stadium at 11:30 am.
