Broncos Come Up Short Against Unbeaten Wildcats

POMONA -- Down 2-0 after the first 30 minutes of action, Ally LaCarra-Platt scored in the 33rd minute, then Samantha Putnam scored the equalizer in the 57th minute, but the Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team surrendered the go-ahead goal in the 86th minute in falling 3-2 to visiting Chico State on Sunday afternoon at Kellogg Stadium in Pomona.

The Broncos fall to 4-5-1 overall and 0-3-1 in the CCAA.  The Wildcats, meanwhile, remain undefeated through their first 10 games of the season, rising to 6-0-4 overall and 5-0-1 in conference play.

Chico's Juliana Los got the scoring started in the 24th minute when she lofted a shot up and over CPP goalkeeper Sydney Williams for the 1-0 lead.  Less than seven minutes later, Abbie Jones served a free kick into the box from 30 yards out where Sarah Emigh headed the ball off one bounce and got it up and over Williams for the two-goal advantage.

Exactly two minutes later in the 33rd minute, LaCarra-Platt connected on an improbable goal, firing a shot that was redirected by a Chico defender at the last minute, allowing the ball to dribble into the left side of the net, opposite of where Wildcats netminder Brenna Meier had leaned to off the initial shot.

Putnam later scored the equalizer when she stole possession of the ball deep in Chico State territory and proceeded to float a shot into the back of the net at 56:13.

Though CPP outshot Chico 13-2 in the second half, it was the visiting Wildcats to come up big late in the contest.  Korie Bozart punched a short pass off of a free kick up to Erin Woods, which caught the CPP defense off guard, and Woods sent it past new CPP keeper Clarissa Sanchez for the game-winner at 85:38.  Sanchez took over for Williams between the posts in the first half.

Overall, the Broncos outshot the Wildcats, 16-8, but Chico State's Meier made eight saves in the match.  Williams made two for CPP before being lifted in the 33rd minute.

Cal Poly Pomona will head to Northern California next weekend, playing at nationally-ranked Sonoma State Friday (3:00 pm) followed by a Sunday matchup at Humboldt State (11:30 am).
