CARSON, Calif. -- Phoenix Shackelford and
William Christmas each finished with team-highs of 13 points and six rebounds, but the Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team couldn't overcome a hot-shooting effort from long range by host Cal State Dominguez Hills in Thursday's 74-69 loss at the Torodome in Carson.
The Broncos fall to 7-5 overall and 5-5 in the CCAA. The Toros rise to 8-7 and 6-4 in conference play.
After falling behind 13-4 early, Cal Poly Pomona turned it around and eventually jumped out in front with a 10-point lead with 12 minutes to go in regulation, but Cal State Dominguez Hills ended the contest outscoring the Broncos 33-18 the rest of the way, connecting on 10 of their final 16 shots, including 6 of 8 from three-point range to sneak past CPP in the end.
In the end, the Broncos did shoot at a 42.6 percent clip on 26 of 61 from the floor for the night, but misfired on 16 of 22 three-pointers and was just 11 of 23 from the free throw line. Conversely, the Toros finished with a 55.6 percent effort (25 of 45) and was 12 of 22 (54.5 percent) from long range.
Nikhil Peters chipped in with nine points to complement the 13 points from Shackelford and Christmas while three others (
Jordan Ogundiran,
Mason Dickerson and
Chris Sullivan) all added seven points.
The Toros had four double-digit scorers led by the 21 points from Colten Kresl.
Cal Poly Pomona returns to action Saturday at Cal State L.A. Tipoff from University Gym in Los Angeles is set for 3:00 pm.
